Guatemalan Ceremonial Cacao
This ancestral Criollo Cacao is from an Indigenous owned & stewarded heritage permaculture farm & agro-forest in the region of Las Victorias, Sacatepequez, Guatemala.
Springs is a family farm, owned by Abuelo Juan for the last 5 decades, rooted in practices of reciprocal land stewardship, Mayan farming techniques and the ancient tradition of growing, harvesting and processing Cacao in alignment with the Mayan Cosmovision.
The land itself is lush and wild, a rolling mountain jungle close to the tropical Pacific Coast, rich in fruit forests of coffee, bananas, mangos, avocados, breadfruit, kaymito, cane, zapotioll and palo banco, watered by 4 abundant natural volcanic springs – from where the forest farm receives its name.
Springs, always has been, always will be, organic. Juan told me never had enough money to afford the agro-chemicals that have become the norm in rural Guatemala, later learning of his stroke of ‘luck’ as agrochemical companies destroyed other forest farms in the region. This Cacao forest is tended to with the loving hearts and hands of a cacao relative and revered as the resting place of the Spirit of Cacao. To connect to the forest, through the medicine of Cacao, is to connect to the heart of the earth.
Sun-dried, hand roasted and peeled, processed by hand on the Metate, this Cacao, from seed to ceremony, is created as has always been in the Mayan tradition. Prayed over, elementally forged and guided by the rhythms of nature.
To purchase this Cacao is to support small-scale Indigenous Cacao farmers & their families in rural Guatemala and to help preserve ancient land stewardship practices and reciprocal relations with this ancestral plant ♥
